The wedding is over, the gifts have been opened, and now you have a very long list of thank you cards to write. Yes, the planning process was daunting but the stack of thank you notes on your to-do list looms large—but, of course, it is incredibly necessary. It’s so important to thank all of your friends and family, not only for their gifts but also for taking part in one of the most important days of your life.

Victoria Della Torre of Etiquette Design Company recommends writing your thank you notes as soon the gifts arrive so you can stay on top of it and it doesn't become an overwhelming task. "If you want to go above and beyond, send a text when you unwrap a gift and then follow up with a thank you note a week or two later," she says.

What to look for in wedding thank you notes

If you love your wedding invitations, it's a great idea to coordinate your thank you notes with a similar design, pattern, or color palette. Many designers and stationery companies offer wedding suites that include optional thank you notes that match the rest of the items in the collection.

  • When should I send wedding thank you notes?

Most experts agree that you should make sure that thank you notes in the mail no later than two months after receiving your gift. To make the process easier, it's recommended to send notes as soon as the gifts arrive. If you'd rather do the notes in bulk, set aside a time with your spouse soon after the wedding—and make it fun! Open up a bottle of wine, put on some music, and take a moment to appreciate all the new things you're enjoying in your home.

  • How should I word wedding thank you cards?

Include a specific example of how you plan to use the gift or how it's already affected your day-to-day life. Keep the note concise (no need to write a novel!) but make sure to include a line expressing how grateful you are that they were able to celebrate with you.
